David Mallamud is an Emmy-nominated composer and orchestrator whose work in musical theater, concert music, and arrangements has been performed by leading artists and ensembles. He is a MacDowell Fellow, Dramatists Guild Fellow, Leonard Bernstein Fellow at Tanglewood, two-time ASCAP Morton Gould Award recipient, Charles Ives Scholarship recipient, and a Fred Ebb, Jonathan Larson, and Richard Rodgers Award finalist. His music for Flight School: The Musical was lauded by Laurel Graeber of The New York Times as the show’s “biggest boon . . . worthy of bigger stages.”

Current projects include What Do You See, a new musical with book and lyrics by Craig Lucas and music by Mallamud; Pandora’s Jar, written with Janine Robledo, including the song “Heights Unknown,” which was named a 2026 Write Out Loud winner; and Spittoonia on the Erie, written with Nathan Christensen and in development with Northern Sky Theater. Mallamud also wrote a song with Craig Lucas for his new play Eleanore.

Mallamud has worked extensively with Mike Mills of R.E.M., arranging Mills’s Concerto for Rock Band and Violin and composing additional music for the project. Written for violinist Robert McDuffie, the concerto premiered with Mills, McDuffie, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has since been performed by major orchestras throughout the United States. Mallamud also collaborated with Mills and Chuck Leavell, keyboardist and musical director of the Rolling Stones, contributing arrangements and additional music to A Night of Georgia Music, a concert program featuring the concerto alongside new arrangements of Georgia-themed songs. Filmed for PBS, the program won an Emmy Award for best long-form arts/entertainment special and earned Mallamud, Mills, and Leavell an Emmy nomination in the composition/arranging category and is scheduled for a Carnegie Hall presentation in July 2026.. Mallamud and Mills continued their collaboration with R.E.M. Explored, a symphonic reimagining of R.E.M. songs premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Mallamud’s other theatrical work includes Dr. Seuss’s The Sneetches The Musical, a collaboration with playwright Philip Dawkins that premiered at Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis; Flight School: The Musical, written with Joshua Cohen and Cara Lustik, which played Off-Broadway, toured China, and toured the U.S.; and Kid Frankenstein, written with Peter Charles Morris, which ran Off-Broadway in 2017. His concert work includes nine song cycles for Dogs of Desire, the Albany Symphony’s rock-inspired new music ensemble; The Persistence of Memories Playlist, a song cycle for voice and guitar published by Les Productions d’Oz; Spatula, a solo classical guitar work published by Les Productions d’Oz; and Elegy, a ballet for the Metropolitan Ballet and Kenwood Symphony.

His acclaimed Broadway Records album, The Wild & Whimsical Worlds of David Mallamud, won a BroadwayWorld Album Award for Best New Compilation and features performers including Sierra Boggess, Christiane Noll, Constantine Maroulis, Janet Dacal, Morgan James, Cathie Ryan, and Dan Webb, conducted by David Alan Miller. The album was produced by Kim Scharnberg, Joel Moss, and David Alan Miller.

Mallamud’s orchestral music was praised by The New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini, who wrote of Mallamud’s Frenzy: “Imagine Stravinsky in his ‘Rite of Spring’ mode writing music for the dance at the gym scene in West Side Storyand you get the idea.” Amy Biancolli of Albany’s Times Union wrote of The Wild & Whimsical Worlds of David Mallamud: “The sum is an album of music conceived for imaginary stages in imaginary worlds, but rendered like old hands. The music is delightful. It’s also insane.”

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and master’s degrees from Juilliard and NYU’s Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program. He pursued additional graduate studies at Yale with Ned Rorem and Evan Ziporyn.
